It appears that the Nicholls State University football team has its coach of the future.

Multiple sources close to the Colonels’ Athletic Department told The Times on Tuesday night that UL-Lafayette assistant coach Tim Rebowe has accepted the team’s vacant head coaching position – a spot that was opened earlier this season when previous coach Charlie Stubbs resigned to focus on his health.

The sources said they were informed by an athletic department official that Rebowe had accepted the coaching position, but that it will not be made official until the Colonels’ 2014 season officially comes to a close on Thursday night against Southeastern.

In Rebowe, the Colonels would be receiving a coach with Nicholls ties – something many boosters have wanted for years.

The 51-year-old UL-Lafayette safeties coach was an assistant coach for the Colonels from 1995-2000, working with the team’s defensive backs, special teams and wide receivers during his tenure.

A Norco native, Rebowe showed interest in the Colonels’ coaching vacancy once before. He applied, and was one of the finalists, for the Nicholls job in 2010 when Stubbs was hired – the last time the job was vacant.

For the past decade, Rebowe has been with UL-Lafayette. He was hired in 2004 and has worked with the team’s linebackers and safeties over the course of his tenure.

Upon his hire, Rebowe would be closer to family. His son Tyler is an infielder on the Colonels’ baseball team.

It is not yet known whether Rebowe would finish the season with UL-Lafayette before taking over at Nicholls or if he would resign with the Ragin’ Cajuns and begin right away.

The Cajuns are 7-3 and are bowl-eligible, thanks to six-straight wins.
