The Voice of the South Lafourche High School football team received a prestigious award this week.

Gaspar “Steve” Stall was honored with the Past Deputy Award at the State Council Knights of Columbus convention in Lafayette.

The award is given annually to one of the state council members who exhibit outstanding service as a knight and also as a Catholic, family-oriented, active member of the community.

Stall hasn’t always been a South Lafourche native – he is originally from New Orleans.

But after serving in World War II, Stall enrolled at LSU, where he enjoyed an athletic career. He initially tried to walk-on to LSU’s football team, but he failed to make the team. He did compete as a college athlete and spent time on LSU’s swimming and diving team. After his days at LSU, Stall accepted a coaching position at Golden Meadow High School in 1953.

After a short stint in New Iberia, Stall would return to Golden Meadow a few years later when he became the school’s head coach in 1955.

Throughout his athletic career as a coach, Stall also served as principal of Golden Meadow Elementary, while also serving on the superintendent’s staff in charge of federal funds – a position he held until his retirement.

Away from his teaching jobs, Stall is known by many locally as “The Voice of South Lafourche High School.”

In his free time, Stall served as the radio voice of the Tarpons during a time that saw the Tarpons have their most successful football run in school history.

Stall’s radio calls for some of the most famous plays in school history can be heard in any DVD films of the old Tarpons’ telecasts.

Stall’s honor isn’t the first time he has been rewarded by a prestigious civic organization.

He was named the Citizen of the Year in 1984 by the Chamber of Commerce. He has also been the Vice President of the Young Man’s Business Club and many other civic clubs throughout Lafourche Parish.

A press release issued by the Knights of Columbus said that Stall is “most deserving of this honor.”

Mr. Stall currently welcomes visits from all family and friends at Broadway in Lockport – where he is treated for Parkinson’s Disease.
