The Vandebilt Catholic softball team’s latest run at a state championship will come at the top of the Class 4A bracket.

The Lady Terriers earned the most power points among 4A schools to earn the No. 1-seed in the 32-team bracket.

Vandebilt (22-6) opened its playoff push yesterday against No. 32 Bolton (10-15).

No score was available for that game at press-time.

The Lady Terriers earned their spot at the top with a dominant second half to the season.

Vandebilt started the season 7-5 with losses to some of the top teams in Louisiana. But they finished strong and have won 15 of their past 16 games before the playoffs, including a 7-6 win against John Curtis – a game that snapped the Lady Patriots’ 58-game winning streak.

Vandebilt Catholic isn’t the only local team with state championship aspirations in Class 4A.

Lady Terriers’ district rival Morgan City earned the No. 16-seed in the bracket. They took on No. 17 Assumption in the opening round.

The two teams met twice in the regular season with the Lady Tigers earning a 2-1 win once and falling 1-0 in the other matchup.

No. 23 Ellender will also be competing in the 4A playoffs. They took on No. 10 Ursuline Academy in the opening round of action.

While three local teams vie for it all in Class 4A, just one Tri-parish school will compete in the Class 5A field.

Co-district champion H.L. Bourgeois took home the No. 22-seed in the state’s highest classification. They played No. 11 Ouachita Parish in the first round.

In Class 3A, Berwick, E.D. White and Patterson all advanced into postseason play.

The Lady Panthers earned the No. 9 seed and hosted No. 24 Jewel Sumner in the first round.

The Lady Cardinals and Lady Jacks earned the No. 20 and No. 23 seeds, respectively.

E.D. White traveled to take on No. 13 Church Point, while Patterson faced off with No. 10 Loranger.

In Class 1A, Houma Christian advanced to the postseason and missed a home game by just a few tenths of a point in the power points system.

The Lady Warriors earned the No. 17-seed and traveled to take on No. 16 Westminster Christian in the opening round.

Vandebilt Catholic is one of eight local teams in the LHSAA softball state playoffs. The Lady Terriers are the No. 1-seed in the Class 4A field.
