Wednesday’s match between the United States and China in the Superdome was the final time legendary player Abby Wambach took the pitch. See Staff Photographer Jose Delgado’s look at the day.
Wambach may not be as nimble as she once was, but that didn’t stop her from trying this acrobatic kick during pregame warmups. The standout had several shots in Wednesday’s match, but couldn’t score.
Abby Wambach tried this header in the first half – arguably her best look at the goal during the 90-plus-minute match. China defeated the Americans 1-0, ending a long home undefeated streak for the USA.
Before taking the pitch for the final time, Abby Wambach joked with reporters about some of the best moments of her career. She said she doesn’t have any regrets about the time she’s spent as a pro soccer star.
