A four-hour standoff in Gibson ended in gunfire Friday night, officials said, when the suspect they had attempted to negotiate with exited his mobile home armed with an assault rifle which he pointed at deputies.

The 55-year-old white man, whose name has not been released pending notification of relatives, had been involved in a dispute with his girlfriend when deputies were called at about 4:30 p.m., Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said. involved, The girlfriend left the trailer at 214 Fandal St. and arriving deputies were confronted by the man who was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun.


Larpenter said the suspect refused to cooperate and a SWAT team responded, setting up a perimeter. After hours of negotiations, the suspect left the mobile home at about 8:30 p.m. and pointed the assault rifle at deputies who immediately fired.

The Louisiana State Police will be conducting an investigation into the incident. No deputies were reported injured.

During the standoff the small community where the incident occurred was blocked off as a safety and neighbors were unable to return to their homes.


Several gathered at a nearby general store until an all-clear was given for them to return.
