A special performance will be held at a Houma church Sunday afternoon, when the Bayou Bell Ringers will share their own unique version of Christmas cheer.

The Bell Ringers is a group of mentally and physically disabled people who make music using hand-bells.

They will appear at 4 p.m. Sunday, at St Matthew’s Episcopal Church on Barrow Street. A reception will follow.

The Cut Off-based group has its own compact disc of music available that includes Christmas favorites.

The group formed a non-profit called “We Can All Ring Inc,” in 1995 when it had none members. Today there are more than 30 members ranging in age from 6-years-old to folks in their forties.

“Some members are blind and some are so severely handicapped that they have the use of one finger only, yet with innovations from local citizens inventing special equipment, they can ring bells,” the group’s website states. “Some Bell Ringers can sing and some can direct the bell choir. In addition to Bell Ringers, we have helpers, singers, parents, and equipment handlers all helping out.”

Music therapist Aaron Champagne has been director of the group since its founding.
