For the past century, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has taught Girls Scouts entre-preneurial and business skills that lead to their success, both today and in the future. Beginning January 11, Girl Scouts across southeast Louisiana are now selling delicious Gid Scout cookies as they launch the next century of female entrepreneurs.
All troops in the area’s Service Unit gathered this past Saturday at the Houma Municipal Auditorium for an educational cookie season kickoff celebration. The girls learned about working their cookie business, what’s new for this cookie season, and sampled the products.
“At a time when less than eight cents of every dollar granted by philanthropic foundations fund girl and women programming, each and every Girl Scout Cookie purchase is key to supporting leadership development in girls,” said Rebecca Pennington. Chef Executive Officer, Girl Scouts Louisiana East.
The Cookie sale has developed female entrepreneurs since the program began in the early 20th century. The Cookie Program allows Girl Scouts to discover their inner leadership potential and use their earnings to power amazing experiences for themselves and their troops in travel, outdoor adventures, STEM programming and service projects. From building a robot to exploring the outdoors, feeding the homeless or assisting the helpless, Girl Scouts are always doing remarkable things.
“The Girl Scout Leadership Experience does not end when Cookie Season ends and cookie proceeds alone do not fund the Girl Scout Movement in southeast Louisiana,” aaid Pennington. Investing in girls is important all year-round.”
The Girl Scouts in our region will be offering nine varieties of cookies this year: Shortbread, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Caramel deLites, Thin Mint, Peanut Butter Patties, Lemonades, Thanks-a-lot, Girl Scout S’mores, and the new Caramel Chocolate Chip, a gluten-free cookie. Cookies are $4 per box. with the gluten-free at $5 a box.
Troops have the option to also donate to local organisations Last year, local Troop 20829 donated 200 bores to The Raven and MacDonnell Children’s Services. Their goal this year is 10,000 boxes. The Brownies of Troop 26062 are also excited for their opportunity to sell cookies. This is their first year of service. Cookie Season is from January 11-March 10.
