Homes in two Houma subdivisions were stripped of their Christmas decorations between Friday night and Saturday morning, prompting a rapid response from deputies who are canvassing for potential video recordings and other clues.

Among items purloined in the Broadmoor subdivision is a mailbox for children to specially use to get letters to Santa Claus, courtesy of Troy Dubois and his fiancee, Brittany LeJeuene. The two created a winter wonderland on the front lawn of their Funderburk Avenue home, with this their second year of adding the extra touch of the mailbox. Last year they received 25 letters and this year were off to a healthy start of 17 or 18, since the mailbox went up the first week of December.

“It’s heartbreaking,” Troy said.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said he is hoping for assistance from the public locating who might be responsible for damaging and stealing decorations in Broadmoor and Oakshire, crimes that are believed to have occurred early Saturday morning.

“There have been multiple reports of decorations being stolen and damaged in this neighborhood,” Larpenter said.

Capt. Kody Voisin, the department’s assistant chief of detectives, said deputies have been searching for the items and whomever might have taken them throughout Saturday. Only two formal complaints were taken by deputies as of early afternoon. Capt. Voisin appealed to others believed victimized to file report as well.

“The patrol division is actively investigating it,” he said. “We want others to report so that we can identify their property if we find it.”

Capt. Voisin said deputies are knocking on doors seeking videos. Social media posts relating to the thefts have suggested that teens could be the culprits. But Capt. Voisin said there is no suspect information developed at this point, meaning a person or persons of no one age group is considered responsible.

Sheriff Larpenter said anyone with information should call the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office at 876-2500 or Bayou Region Crime Stoppers, which may make the caller eligible for a cash reward, at (800) 743-7433.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information is gathered.
