Traffic stop yields dope arrest

Max Matherne, 28, of Raceland, was jailed early Saturday after Lafourche sheriff’s deputies found 3.4 grams of marijuana in his possession, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Brennan Matherne said.

Max Matherne, who was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation, also had 10 MDMA pills and a handgun, authorities said.

At the jail, Max Matherne ran from deputies, but was quickly captured.

Charges against the Raceland man include simple escape, battery of a police officer, possession of marijuana (3rd offense) and MDMA, illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a CDS and possession of a firearm/carrying of a concealed weapon by a convicted felon.

Max Matherne is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.

Authorities said the driver of the car involved in the traffic stop was issued a warning for the traffic violation.

Weed lands man in jail

Almost immediately, deputies recognized the smell emanating from the vehicle they’d stopped near St. Mary Street in Thibodaux Sunday night.

Lafourche sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Brennan Matherne said Charles Richard Jr., 24, of Paintcourtville, exited the vehicle. As deputies spoke to him, the other occupants began moving around inside the vehicle. Richard fled as deputies addressed the men inside the vehicle.

Richard was apprehended a short time later, Matherne said.

Deputies recovered two plastic bags containing approximately 46.8 grams of marijuana, which Richard admitted was his. He also had nearly $1,000 in cash in his possession and two warrants for his arrest, Matherne said.

Richard was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, obstruction of justice and resisting an officer, as well as the warrants – a contempt of court warrant in Lafourche and simple burglary in Assumption. Bond was set at $35,000.

The driver of the vehicle, Tyrone Tucker, 20, of Napoleonville, was issued a criminal summons for possession of marijuana (first offense) after a small amount of the drug was found inside the vehicle, Matherne said.

Burglar caught in store

Houma Police arrested London Tanner, 20, of Evelyn Avenue in Houma, who told authorities he was just smoking and relaxing outside Canata’s Food Market when the burglar alarm sounded, authorities said.

But the store’s surveillance footage told a different story, Chief Dana Coleman said.

Police responded to the alarm at 1977 Prospect Ave. shortly after 5 a.m. Monday. Coleman said Tanner was sitting behind the business.

A replay of the store video showed that Tanner entered the store through a front door and took more than $1,200 worth of cigarettes and alcohol.

Tanner was charged with simple burglary. He was then transported to the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex to be booked.

Coleman said all of the stolen merchandise was recovered.
