Terrebonne Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said immediate action by Sheriff’s Office personnel helped prevent what could have become a dangerous situation last week in Houma.

Last Wednesday, Terrebonne Narcotics Task Force officers said they saw two subjects meeting up in the parking lot of a local business.

Authorities said they had prior information that both of the suspects were involved in illegal narcotic activity.

One of the suspects, Roland Chambers, 49, of 152 Lost Bayou Ct., Houma, had been released from federal custody less than two months ago, according to authorities.

He is still on supervised probation.

Agents said they began conducting surveillance on both subjects. The two followed one another from the parking lot to a nearby residential area.

Narcotics agents continued to observe as the subjects stopped their vehicles on McKinley Street.

Chambers allegedly exited his vehicle and approached the other vehicle, while the second suspect remained inside.

Authorities said it appeared as those the two suspects were going to engage in a narcotics exchange when narcotics agents approached.

At that time, Chambers allegedly ran back to his vehicle and attempted to flee.

As he did, authorities said he struck an unmarked TPSO vehicle.

No one was injured in the collision and minor damage to the unit was sustained.

After the vehicle was hit, TPSO agents maintained control of the car and came to a controlled stop.

As Chambers continued to try and flee, the vehicle slid through the front yard of a residence and hit a utility pole before coming to a stop.

Chambers was quickly taken into custody without incident at that time.

As narcotics agents escorted Chambers from his vehicle, they observed narcotics in plain view inside the vehicle. Through investigation, authorities were also able to recover approximately two ounces of heroin and more than $700.

The other subject was not found to be in possession of any illegal narcotics or contraband. Because of that, no charges were filed against the other person in this case.

Chambers is charged with possession with the intent to distribute heroin, transactions involving drug proceeds, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting an officer and criminal damage to property.

He was taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail where he is being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond.

Authorities said they have also made Chambers’ probation officer aware of the incident.

He is still held in the Terrebonne Parish Jail, as of Monday afternoon at press-time.

Roland Chambers was released from federal custody two months ago, but is now in custody of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office after an incident this past week.
