Our poll asking whether Lafourche teachers should get a raise funded by tax dollars generated the following responses online:

“Absolutely. I think we have to value our children and their future. We don’t rank very well in terms of starting salary and some of the other things that young teachers look at when making decisions for their futures. I think we have to take it upon ourselves to give our people what they deserve.”

-Joe Reed

“We are too tax happy, as it is. This is not anything against any teachers personally, but Louisiana is near the bottom in just about every, single metric when it comes to education, and as a businessman, I just can’t justify giving people who are doing a poor job some extra money. Show me results, and then I’ll show you what you want.

-Bob Thibodeaux

“I think it’s past time. It’s a property tax, which everyone pays into and not just the wealthy, which is good. Everyone should be taxed, because it should affect all of the people of our parish.”

-Louisa Williams

I wouldn’t support it. I love our teachers and I love our school system, but there are a lot of people in the system who are not needed. When I went to school, there was one principal and maybe one assistant principal, but the same number of kids. Today, the high schools have three, four or even five assistant principals. For what?
