A 25-year-old Thibodaux man, who is also a convicted felon, is in custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office on multiple charges.

He became suspicious to authorities because of the marijuana cigarette he had behind his ear during a traffic stop in which he was the passenger in a car.

At 1:40 p.m. on April 2, LPSO deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle on West 8th Street in Thibodaux.

Deputies made contact with the driver and identified him as Lynes Jones, 25, of Thibodaux.

While speaking to Jones, authorities noticed that the passenger in the vehicle, Todd Chenier, 25, of Thibodaux, was not wearing his seat belt and had a suspected marijuana cigarette behind his ear.

The suspect quickly removed the cigarette from his ear and reached into the console area, but deputies quickly removed him from the car.

A K-9 unit from the Thibodaux Police Department arrived on the scene and it alerted the presence of possible narcotics inside the vehicle.

During a search, deputies recovered a loaded handgun under the passenger seat where Chenier had been sitting. No other contraband was found in the vehicle. Chenier admitted to having the weapon, but authorities later learned that it had been reported stolen from St. Tammany Parish.

Chenier was arrested and taken to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux.

He was booked with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and possession of marijuana.

His bond is set at $25,300.

The driver was given a summons for a seat belt violation.
