Fletcher Technical Community College is hosting a career fair week at their Schriever campus and also at their Houma campus, featuring at least 24 employers looking for qualified workers to fill openings.

This is the fifth year Fletcher has offered the career fair, which is open to Fletcher students and alumni. Roughly 200 students attend the one in Schriever and a little over 100 students attend the fair at the Houma campus, said Jessica Thornton, spokesman for Fletcher.

“It’s important that we showcase the opportunities for our students here at home, in our community,” said Earl Meador, Chancellor of Fletcher College. “The majority of our graduating students find gainful employment here in the surrounding parishes, which continuously strengthens this region.”

All of the employer booths at the fair are related to local companies that locals know and trust, including Danos Marine, Gulf Island, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, and Fastenal, among others.

Employers are not only looking for employees to help

fulfill their general workforce needs, but also highly-skilled, highly-trained individuals, said Thornton. Fletcher strives to train each student in preparation for the ever-changing needs of business and industry.

Data on how many Fetcher students get hired through the career fair is not currently collected, but the college is working on tracking mechanisms for the future, Thornton said.

The career fair will offer three workshops to strengthen resume writing skills, as well, Thornton said.

Between 75 and 85 percent of Fletcher’s graduates get jobs within six months of graduating, but that number doesn’t include those who graduate and then enroll in four year universities, Thornton said.

Kayla Metrejean, a freshman at Fletcher, has never been to a career fair but is going this week in the hope of finding a job to carry her through college.

“I’ve known a few people that have actually got their jobs from speaking to people at career fairs,” Metrejean said. “So, I’m hoping to get some information from the companies about what they do and what’s in their fields to help me make my decision of where I’ll go and hopefully I’ll get a few interviews.”

The fair at the Schriever campus will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature more jobs in the fields of integrated production technologies, criminal justice, drafting and business.

The fair at the Houma campus will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and feature more jobs from the fields of nursing, allied health and technical programs.

Students speak with prospective employers about job opportunities at Fletcher Technical Community College’s career fair last year. Fletcher is hosting another career fair today and tomorrow at their Schriever and Houma campuses.
