A former local standout student-athlete and college signee is in custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly was involved in a shooting incident which ended in two victims being shot.

Justen Harris, 21, of Houma, turned himself into authorities and is held on a $1.11 million bond on charges of two counts of attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery with use of a firearm in the incident.

Harris was a standout athlete at both Vandebilt Catholic and Ellender Memorial High School. He played basketball and football and signed with Tabor College out of high school.

Harris joins Kyrie Verdin, 20, of Thibodaux, in being charged in the incident. Authorities believe two other male suspects were involved.

The alleged incident took place on April 12, 2018 when deputies responded to Cypress Court Trailer Park in Gray after learning that two people had been shot.

Upon arrival, authorities learned that a 22-year-old male and an 18-year-old female were injured in the shooting.

Authorities learned that Verdin traveled to the residence with Harris and two other men and they planned to rob the victims.

Verdin was the first to approach the residence and made contact with the female victim. Authorities believe Verdin pulled the female aside while Harris and the other men entered the residence – at least one armed with a handgun.

They allegedly broke down the male victim’s bedroom door and fired multiple rounds at him while the male victim fired back in self-defense.

The female victim was another room at the time and was struck during the exchange.

Verdin was arrested in April and remains in jail on a $1.1 million bond.

This past week, Harris turned himself into authorities on the above-mentioned charges.

Authorities are seeking help to identify the two other suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-743-7433.
