Nearly 200 people showed up – including 60 veterans who were wounded while in service to the nation – for a day of food and fishing in Pointe-aux-Chenes Saturday, and those who attended say nobody left hungry or disappointed.

The Wounded Warrior Project, sponsored by the Terrebonne Patriots, featured home-cooked food and a day of fishing for the vets at the Pointe-aux-Chenes Marina on Paw Paw Court.

Local organizers included Danny Picou of the Terrebonne Patriots, which manage the project, as well as Houma bail bondsman Tim Fanguy and his moth er, Margaret.

“We brought in vets from Terrebonne Parish, right here, and all over Louisiana,” Fanguy said.

Among the people who helped make the event a success was Monica Vargas, a retired DMV worker from Houma who now lives in Jeanerette.

“I met Miss Margaret last year and we talked about the project,” Vargas said. “She said she had cooked for it last year and I told her I love cooking.”

So with the help of a Jeanerette friend – trucking company safety manager Steve Mannina – catfish were cooked, along with rice and other seafood. Taking part in the event, for Vargas, was a tribute to her father, the late Clarence Joseph Duplantis of Houma.

“It is so much joy to do this,” she said. “My father was a Cold War Germany veteran and he died in 2007. It is a great feeling in my heart to know that I can help them.”
