GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAMS STRUT THEIR STUFF AT WALKER

Some of the Houma-Thibodaux area’s top girls’ basketball programs showed out this weekend at the Walker Tournament.

Several locals competed in the three-day event, which featured some of the top programs from around the state.

Three locals – South Lafourche, E.D. White and Houma Christian – left the event unscathed, showing the state what folks around here already knew: this area is loaded with hoops.

South Lafourche went 3-0 in the tournament, trumping a trio of opponents who are high in the rankings in their respective classes.

On Friday, South Lafourche beat Class 3A power Parkview Baptist 59-52 – their closest game of the tournament.

On Saturday, the Lady Tarpons double-dipped with victories, trumping Warren Easton 49-38 and St. Thomas Aquinas 79-28.

The victory against Easton was especially impressive, as many project them to be one of the best teams in Class 4A — a squad that already beat Ellender this season.

E.D. White also rolled through Walker unbeaten, keeping their lengthy winning streak intact to start the season.

The Lady Cardinals beat Baker. Springfield and Franklinton in the tournament, dominating all of the challengers in lopsided wins. With the victories, E.D. White is now 11-0 on the season — one of the top teams in Class 3A.

Over in Class 1A, Houma Christian also showed its chops, beating St. Thomas Acquinas, Salmen and Donaldsonville to up their overall record to 9-4 on the season.

Senior slasher Dee Thomas led the Christian Warriors in scoring in each game.

BOYS BASKETBALL TEAMS FARE WELL OVER WEEKEND

Area boys’ basketball teams were active this past weekend, showcasing themselves at different venues around Louisiana.

South Lafourche competed at the Patterson Tournament, posting one win and two losses in the three-days of that event.

The Tarpons lost to St. Martinville, then Lafayette to open the event, then rebounded and beat North Vermilion 66-51 on Saturday.

Senior guard Seth Borne continued his torrid scoring pace in Patterson, leading the Tarpons in scoring in all three games. Against North Vermilion, Borne had a game-high 34 points — a high school career high.

At Chalmette High School’s Tournament, locals were asked to square off against one another in the weekend’s third-place game.

Central Lafourche won third-place at the prestigious event, trumping HI. Bourgeois 75-55 to score the consolation title.

The Trojans opened the tournament by beating Salmen, then lost a close, hard-fought 59-55 game against Riverside Academy, which dropped them to the third-place game.

On the other side of the bracket. Hi. Bourgeois opened the tournament with a win against Slidell. before falling to host Chalmette — a rematch from a non-district tile between the clubs on Dec. 5.

In Lake Charles. Terrebonne won two-straight games to earn high marks at the Barbe High School Tournament.

The Tigers opened the event with a loss against Peabody — one of the top teams in Louisiana.

But they rebounded quickly, trumping Washington-Marion and Barbe in consecutive days to finish the event with more wins than losses.

Standout guard Deedy Gauno was named All-Tournament for the Tigers.

Terrebonne coach Derek Szush said the weekend was much-needed for the Tigers — proof that the Tigers can play with anyone they’ll face in the rest of the season.

CARDINALS STUMP RIVAL VANDEBILT AGAIN

E.D. White found a way to one-up rival Vandebilt yet again.

Just weeks after the Cardinals beat the Terriers in the Division II Football State Playoffs, E.D. White did it again over the weekend, this time in soccer, trumping their heated rivals 1-0 in a district match.

Both teams were undefeated going into the match — a pairing of two of the top soccer programs in Louisiana.

The breaking point came in the 19th minute when Jordan Servat headed a corner kick into the back of the net to take an early lead.

That advantage held up throughout the match, thanks to ball-control offense and dominant defense from the Cardinals, which allowed them to secure the victory.

With the win, E.D. White is now 6-0-4 on the season, while Vandebilt is 8-1-2.

The teams will face one more time in district play and may even square off in the playoffs, as both are among the short list of favorites to win state titles.

Before the match, Vandebilt was No. 1 in the Division III power rankings and E.D. White was No. 2.
