In 1966 Armand “Bay-Bay” Petite a barber, a South Lafourche Constable and a likable character who was a good friend of my boss Hubert Robichaux. (Think Gab-by Hayes but much better locking We three went to a shrimp bail given by Terrebonne Sheriff Charting Reran and after a few drinks Hubert told Bay-Bay that be and I was driving to a convention in “Washington. DC. Bay-Bay, who was having a difficult time in his life, said Td like to go with you” Hubert. said, “Sure, get with Leroy”
The next day. Hubert told me. “I hope forgets about Washington. I love the guy. but I don’t know if I want to spend a week with him with our busy schedule. I” We did forget but at four a.m. on departure day Bay-Bay called roe “Pick me up on your way to Hubert” he said, and we were off to Washington D.C.
Our first function was a tour of the capital where we met Congressman Hale Boggs. then House Whip. He recognized Hubert and invited us to his office. “Fellows.” he said, “In one tour. Mrs. Emelda Marcos first lady of the Philippines will address a joint session a Congress and. Many member are on vacation. We don’t like empty seats on such occasions so we send our staffs and visitors ”. He gave us three ticket a great honor We thanked him went take our seats in the House. There we noticed Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Speaker of the House Tip O’Nell and others in make-up. Rouge and lipstick. We were told that this was necessary because of early color T.V.
A young gentleman sitting next to Bay-Bay asked him “What” district do you represent” “Me,” said Bay Bay, I m not one of them crooks I came because my friend Hale Boggs asked me to Hubert and I slid down in our seats “Well, good for you he answered. “I couldn’t even get a ticket for my wife, and I am Congressman for the third district of Maine I’m one of those crooks” Hubert and I dumped further in our seats. “Oh, yon and Hail Boggs are okay Said Bay-Bay ‘it’s them other guys I later related this to his adopted son Sammy and we had a good laugh.
“Bay-Bay” died some years ago in the Cut off Nursing Home and we remained friends even though he supported my opponent when I ran for Assessor because they belonged to an association Speech, time! We heard Mrs. Marcos. hut could not see her shoes. The “sandal scandal” was years away. Google that it’s a great story.
The Bomb
In 1962 I drove my boss and his wife Tootsie”” to Cleveland. Ohio to attend a conference of the “International Association of Assessing Officers” of which we were members. Shall and Gulf took as out for dinner and entertainment After Hubert and Tootsie went to bed, I took the tax men out for our entertainment taking them to country music clubs and singing with the bands Some were national stars that I knew personally through my disc jockey and Mrs. Jimmie Rodgers connections.
At three in the morning, not long after I got back the phone rang. Hubert said, “Where haw you been and did you hear the news” “NO,” I said. “Well looks like we’re at war with Cuba and Russia and they might atom tomb bomb us,” (His words) “Pack up, get the car; we’re going home” I did, and we headed south. Watching the sky were three frightened people and very once in a while, one saying, “Is that a Funny cloud or “Don’t the sky look bad or “what’s that” Little did we know that it could have been the end of our civilization as we know it BYE NOW.
