South Louisiana Community College in Morgan City, will host a job fair focused on the maritime industry today from 9 a.m. to noon, at its Young Memorial Campus, 900 Youngs Road in Morgan City.

Riggers, welders, deckhands, vessel mates or captains, able seamen, fitters, tackers, electricians, engineers, and other skilled tradesmen will have an opportunity to meet local companies hiring for the maritime industry, SLCC Marketing Director Christine Payton, said.


This free event is open to the public.

Payton said SLCC encourages job seekers to dress professionally and bring copies of their work history and industry certifications.


Nancy Roy. Outreach and Engagement Coordinator at SLCC’s Corporate College, the Maritime Job Fair will offer companies the opportunity to meet potential employees face-to-face.

“Job fairs are an important part of the recruiting process since business are able meet hundreds of candidates in a matter of hours, saving them time and resources.”

Kirby Corporation, and Laborde Marine LLC are among the companies that will be represented at the event.

Roy said SLCC’s Corporate College was established in 3015. This division of SLCC offers short-term training for in-de-man d jobs to meet the needs of the community’s workforce.

Payton said SLCC is being aggressive in stamping for job growth in the tri-parish area.

Just before last Christmas, SLCC entered into a historic partnership with Nichol-1s State University, to make smooth transfer options avail-able for its students to transfer to Nicholls after their second year of classes, with the hope of obtaining a four year degree in Biology. Business Administration. Criminal Justice or Nursing.

Dr. Jay dune. Nicholls State President, signed four articulation agreements which guarantee a transfer to Nicholls after earning Associate’s degree in the above named fields, from SLOC.


“Nicholls is the neutral ground where St Mary Terrebonne and Lafourche come together. We are one.” Clune said.

Dr. Jim Henderson, who is president of the University of Louisiana System, which Nicholls and SLCC are a part of. said the partnership is an example of how the state’s two and four year colleges can put their heads together with a mission to serve students first before anything else.
