NBA free agency started this past weekend. Major League Baseball is approaching the All-Star Break — one of the more exciting times of the year.

Oh, and NFL training camps are about two or three weeks away from beginning and school starts in about a month.

Who said we’re in the dog days of summer?

From where I sit, we’re just about to start really having some fun.

So we opened up the mailbag this week and decided to let you guys in on some of the fun.

In between scoping NBA free agency rumors, I was able to answer a few of your questions.

If you have one, yourself, drop it at casey@rushing-media.com or find me on Twitter @casey_gisclair.

Q. Who is going to be Ellender’s football coach next season if David McCormick is running for office? (Asked by Ron, Houma)

A. David McCormick. In announcing his candidacy for Terrebonne Parish President McCormick made it clear that he’s not stepping down as Ellender’s head football coach. He also stressed that he believes he can do the job to the best of his ability, despite running a political campaign. Wheth-

er or not McCormick can actually pull that off remains to he seen, but 111 say this. If there’s anyone locally who can do it it would be him That dude absolutely can’t keep still. He’s one of the busiest, most active men I know. Fm sure he will find a way to make it work. He just won’t get much sleep But heck, for him, that’s the norm.

Q: Can anyone locally slop Terrebonne football? (Asked by Ross, Houma)

A: I don’t see it. The Tigers have two players on their roster who are being recruited by every college in the country and a handful of others who are getting looks from local and regional schools around the Southeast. Can Terrebonne be as good as they were last year when they went undefeated except for their two meetings with Destrehan? That remains to be seen. But can they repeat their post as the top dog locally? I don’t see why not. I think if s highly likely that they’re again the local kings of the jungle.

Q: What position is the key to Nicholls’ football season? (Asked by Timmy, Houma)

A: Ah odd as it sounds, I think one of the big keys to Nicholls’ 2019 season is kicker. For the past couple seasons. Lorran Fonseca was a huge part of Nicholls’ successes. He was steady and reliable — one of the top kickers in all of the Football Championship Subdivision. But he’s gone off to graduation and the Colonels will be breaking in a bunch of unknowns next season That’s a big deal In the Southland Conference, there are so many games that are decided by one possession in the final quarter. Having a good kicker is a weapon The Colonels must find a steady, reliable option. And heck, for that matter, so must LSU, too. with Cole Tracy now off to graduation. Where would the Tigers have been last season without him?

Q: How good will the Saints be this fall? (Asked by Ricky, Raceland)

A: As good as anyone in the NFL. Heck, that team was a hair away from making it to the Super Bowl last year and they return their core again this season. like always, it’s going to come down to health. Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and some of the other key cogs have to stay healthy. That’s a must. And heck, you have to get lucky to win a Super Bowl, too — no matter who you are. Last year, the Saints had the talent and were mostly healthy, but their Turk ran out by a missed null in the NFC Championship Game. Two years ago, they lost via a last-second Hail Mary. Will that lucky bounce go the teams way one more time before Drew Brees retires? Time will tell.

Q: How’s the golf game? Ready to play a round sometime? (Asked by Josh, Larose)

A: It’s starting to come around. I started playing the Thursday before Easter, which is more than two months ago now. Then, I was woefully out of shape and had absolutely, positively no strength in my arms, legs, hips and abdomen. Heck. I’m still no Hercules now, but I have much better stamina now than I did then and my swing speeds are accelerating to levels that are respectable. Last week, I hit a 6-iron about 145 yards, and I was able to repeat the swing about a dozen times ever and over again The last thing I need to work on before getting out on the course is my putting. The only thing I’ve not dome in this process is putt. But I’ll tell you this, it’s been so fulfilling and fun getting out there and being active. I look forward to playing. Considering that two years ago, I was so vitamin D deficient that I couldn’t stand being in the sun far mare than 5-10 minutes at a time, getting a 90-minute sweat 4-6 times a week in the late-afternoons is a blessing I cherish.

Q: I’m a Braves fan like yon. How far can our team go tins year? (Asked by Tim, Houma)

A: Well, Tim. if you read this, send me your email address and I can add you into a private Facebook group I’m in with about 15-20 other local Braves fens. To answer your question, I think we’re capable of making the playoffs and winning the Divisional Round, but little more. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. We’re still super young. Ozzie Albies, Ronald Acuna, Mike Soroka and Austin Riley are hardly of drinking age. but are big-time superstar players. And the team still has a loaded farm system that ranks among the best in baseball The next decade is ours. This is just the beginning.
