June is loaded with fishing rodeos in the Houma-Thibodaux area. One in particular will bring loads of fun to fisherman and also much-needed money to one of our most prestigious Mardi Gras krewes.

The Krewe of Terreanians holds its 16th-annual fishing rodeo at the Houma Municipal Auditorium June 5-7.

Including salt water, fresh water and even one offshore division, the annual event is a hit for everyone who attends – even those who don’t even want to fish at all, but just want to come out and pass a good time.

“We pride this as a good, ole-fashioned family fun event,” said rodeo organizer Charles Kornegay. “I’m not even a big fisherman, myself. A lot of the people who help with the event aren’t either. We just like to get an event that lets the people in the community have a good time.”

For Terranians, the rodeo is a win-win. Because it’s a fundraiser, most of the proceeds go to the Mardi Gras krewe to help with the basic expenses that go with maintaining and operating a Carnival operation.

But the rodeo also takes a percentage of its proceeds and donates to a worthwhile cause – usually a noteworthy charity in the area.

Kornegay said this year’s title charity hasn’t yet been decided, but he said people are always attracted to the idea that some of the proceeds from the event are giving back to those in need.

“That’s something that we take pride in,” he said. “We love to give back.”

The event’s versatility is also a plus.

Fishermen of all ages and genres are welcome at the event throughout the rodeo’s multiple categories. In freshwater, prizes will be

awarded for bass, Sac-a-Lait, perch, catfish and five-bass stringer. In saltwater, reds, specks, drum, flounder and five-red and five-trout stringers will be weighed.

Offshore, the event will pay a $500 cash prize to the angler who snags the best red snapper – a luxury considering that the rodeo is held during the open of the snapper season.

But all that’s for the fishing nuts.

If that’s not your thing, that’s OK, as music and tons of food and drinks will be enjoyed inside the Municipal Auditorium.

“This isn’t just a Mardi Gras thing. It’s bigger than just the Krewe of Terreanians,” Kornegay said.

“All people are welcome. We want everyone to come out and attend. It’s a great weekend.”
