The Lafourche Parish Council voted to make the internal legislative auditor’s position full-time again at their April 28 meeting, after voting to make it part-time during their previous meeting.
District 6 Councilman Lindel Toups proposed the resolution, which was not on the agenda for that meeting, after District 3 Councilman Aaron Caillouet provided a job description for the position.
“Let this thing ride out till the end of the year and then if the next council, and then, then next council, if they don’t want it, let them vote it out,” District 5 Councilman John Arnold said.
The parish council will be elected during the October 24 gubernatorial primary election. The internal legislative auditor’s position expires at the end of the year.
The shift came after Legislative Internal Auditor Tommy Lasseigne sent Council Chairman Jerry LaFont an email, wherein he states his own position would be suitable as a part-time position.
Council members had discussed Lasseigne’s job performance during an executive session in February.
Caillouet said a perception Lasseigne has nothing to do exists because “he has been at the beck and call of council members individually who wants him to look at different things.”
Caillouet said the internal auditor has been used more like an inspector general than a legislative auditor and the new job description specifies what Lasseigne is
actually supposed to do.
Toups said the reason the council voted to make Lasseigne’s position part-time during the previous meeting because some councilmembers were confused about whether or not they were voting for or against making the position part-time.
The vote count was five for making the position full-time again, two against, and two abstaining from voting.
Lasseigne could not be reached for comment before The Times went to print on Monday evening.
