Annette Fontana, a prosecutor with the Lafourche Parish District Attorney’s Office, announced that she is running for Lafourche Parish Clerk of Court.

Vernon Rodrigue, who is retiring after 23 years of service, currently holds the position.

Fontana graduated from Nicholls State University and then taught gifted and talented students in Houma schools. She was about to sign a teaching contract in the summer of2000 when she received an acceptance letter from Southern University Law Center. After receiving her juris doctorate, she began practicing civil law with Morvant and Cavell Law Firm.

In 2008, Fontana joined the Lafourche District Attorney’s office as a felony prosecutor, where she’s prosecuted major crimes cases ever since. She is also an adjunct professor at Nicholls, teaching family law.

Fontana is a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, as well as the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Louisiana.

“My varied areas of practice have made me familiar with every aspect of the clerk’s operations, from the maintenance of property, civil and criminal records to the interaction that the office has with other state and federal court,” Fontana said in her campaign announcement.

Fontana serves on the Louisiana State Bar Association House of Delegates and has previously served as the president of the Lafourche Parish Bar Association. Away from the courtroom, she is an advisory board member for the Bayou Country Children’s Museum and past chairman of the Thibodaux chamber’s board. She has also worked with Red Cross, Bayou Clean Up and Hope for Animals.

Fontana said her experience practicing civil and criminal law in Lafourche make her the best candidate for the job.

Fontana’s goal is to upgrade the office’s technological offerings and operations. Fontana said the Lafourche clerk’s website would also be revamped, providing greater accessibility to the public and attorneys.

“We live in an age where information is usually at your fingertips,” Fontana said. “To better serve the public, the clerk’s office should be on the cutting edge of technology.”

Lafourche District Attorney Camille A. Morvant II endorsed Fontana.

“She is a good leader in the District Attorney’s office and will make a great Clerk of Court,” Morvant said. “I support her campaign even though her election would be a loss to my office.”
