A cool front is passing this week in the Houma-Thibodaux area, which will give us our first taste of reasonable weather after months of heat and humidity.

Home decor experts said the cooler weather could be a good time to make some of those much-needed changes to your living space.

Taysha Murtaugh with Country Living said she scoured Pinterest and other social media to get a sense for what’s hot and what’s not right now in the ever-changing world of home decor.

In her list, she outlined that all-white rooms are trending out, as well as the use of marble, cooper accessories and generic casual furniture and couches.

Her list said that trends in the industry are always changing, but added that what’s hot right now is the use of dark green paint in family rooms, velvet, faux finishes and also the use of brass – when incorporated into furniture.

Locals who enjoy doing such projects said there’s no time like the present to get started if there’s work needed to be done in your home.

Thibodaux native Betsy Newman said she loves to change things up in her home, calling her interest in home decor a “passion and not a hobby.”

She said over the years, she’s helped family members in Baton Rouge with some of their renovations, as well, stating that the biggest piece of advice she has for any novice is to simply get started.

“We all say that we want to do this or that, but then life happens and everything gets put on the back burner,” Newman said. “My No. 1 tip to anyone would be to start. Break the ice, make the time and get started. Studies say that there’s less stress and anxiety in our lives when the home is truly a place of peace and comfort. Take the time, make a plan and get it done. I think it will be worth it.”

Like Murtaugh, Newman agreed that trends in home decor are always changing.

But unlike Murtaugh, Newman said she doesn’t pay much attention to the latest and greatest.

She said it’s important to remember her golden rule of home decor: “No one can tell you what you like, except you.”

“If you like brown and these experts say that brown is out, who cares? You like brown. You have to do what you like,” Newman said. “Your home is your home. Your man cave is your man cave. If it isn’t a representation of what you like, then why are you doing this?”

But when pressed to give a few tips for what’s trendy this year, Newman said dark, warm colors are in – especially in bedrooms.

She said old-fashioned quilts are also making a comeback, especially in the South.
