Michael “Mike” James Deroche, 65, a native and resident of Houma, La., died at 9:43 a.m. surrounded by family on Thursday, May 12, 2016, after a brief battle with a rare cancer.

A retired training officer with 23 years of service with the Houma Fire Department, Mr. Deroche served as the parish’s director of Homeland Security and Office of Emergency Preparedness for 12 years. He was fire chief of Grand Caillou Fire Department for two years. He was a member of several civic and professional organizations, held many medical and hazmat certifications and was a charter member of the Krewe of Hercules.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Roxane Champagne Deroche; mother, Dolores Labit Deroche; sons, Michael Jr. (Danielle) and Jared (Amanda) Deroche; daughter, Amanda (Nicholas Sr.) Fields; brothers, Wayne (Laverne) and Ralph (Shanna) Deroche; sisters, Dianna (Myron Aycock) Deroche and Susan (Dean) Chaisson; and nine grandchildren.
