Some state troopers will be cutting a lower profile than usual this month as they patrol the highways of the Troop C area, along with those in other parts of Louisiana.

LSP is adding 20 Dodge Chargers to its fleet, and unlike the patrol vehicles now on the road, the additions will be less easily identifiable.

“Each troop in the state will be getting two of the unmarked Chargers,” said Trooper First Class Jesse LaGrange, a Troop C spokesman. “We should be receiving these vehicles this month for patrol. Our plan for these units is for them to aid in our efforts to reduce the number of aggressive, distracted, and impaired drivers that are on our roadways.”

Fully marked units as well as marked motorcycles will remain on patrol.

“We have 10 troops across the state, so there will only be 20 unmarked Chargers assigned for patrol,” LaGrange said. “This is a small number compared to the number of fully marked units. Also, we would like to remind the public that the Troopers using these vehicles will be in the full and easily recognizable State Police uniform.”

A posting on the LSP Face-book page about the new cars notes that “highly visible and detectable patrol vehicles used by our troopers have often hindered efforts in conducting enforcement related to dangerous driving behaviors. These new less visible vehicles will allow our Troopers to blend in with traffic, and observe and stop drivers who choose to drive recklessly.”

The semi-marked Dodge Chargers will be outfitted with reflective silver lettering and Louisiana boot badge that will be less visible than the traditional red and blue graphics. The vehicles will be equipped with low profile exterior and interior blue emergency lighting instead of the traditional overhead light bar.

The unmarked Dodge Chargers will be equipped with blue low profile exterior and interior mounted emergency lights, and will carry no identifiable exterior markings.

Interiors of the cars, LaGrange and other officials said, are remaining the same as always.

Troopers conducting enforcement activities in fully, semi, and unmarked vehicles will still be wearing the official and highly identifiable blue Louisiana State Police Uniform.

The Louisiana State Police is about to become a little bit harder to spot out on the open road. Each troop in the state is getting two unmarked Dodge Chargers, which LSP hopes will cut down on the number of aggressive drivers on the roads.
