For the first time in 15 years, Nicholls State University is looking for a new athletic director.

University President Dr. Bruce Murphy announced on Friday morning that Rob Bernardi has resigned as the school’s AD — a position he’s held since 2001.

In a statement released by Nicholls, Murphy praised Bernardi’s work, citing several facility improvements the school has seen under his watch.

Murphy said Bernardi’s resignation is effective beginning on September 1 and the search for a full-time director is already ongoing.

An interim AD is expected to be hired to handle operations in the present.

“I am deeply appreciative for all of Rob’s contributions to Nicholls and wish him the best in this next phase of his career,” Murphy said.

For Bernardi, a large part of his job has been finding ways to do things with a limited — and often nonexistent — budget.

During his time as Nicholls AD, Bernardi has helped spearhead projects to improve John L. Guidry Stadium, Didier Field and Stopher Gymnasium — the Colonels’ football, baseball and basketball homes.

The program also constructed a new soccer complex in recent years.

In terms of personnel, Bernardi hired several coaches in his 15 years.

The AD was responsible for hiring women’s basketball coach DoBee Plaisance, outgoing soccer coach Dylan Harrison and baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux — all who are considered highly successful by their peers.
