Nicholls knows who it will face in the NCAA Tournament.

The NCAA released the brackets for the 2018 NCAA Tournament on Monday night and the Colonels earned a No. 16 seed in the bracket – their first-ever bid into the 64-team tournament.

Nicholls is in the Kansas City Region. They earned the No. 16 seed. They will take on No. 1 Mississippi State, the defending National Champions. The game will be broadcast nationally at 5 p.m. on ESPN 2. It will take place at Mississippi State’s campus in Starkville.

The Colonels earned the auto-bid for the conference after winning the Southland Conference Championship this past weekend, beating Stephen F. Austin in the Finals.

Their challenge in the Round of 64 will be steep against a Lady Bulldogs team that won it all last year and enters the tournament with a 32-1 record.

Mississippi State did not face a Southland team in the regular season, but they did play LSU and beat them by 13.

The long odds didn’t deter Nicholls’ excitement. The team had a viewing party on campus and erupted as they saw their name on the ESPN broadcast unveiling the bracket.

The Colonels are one of three Louisiana teams in the field.

LSU got an at-large bid and earned a No. 6 seed. They are in the Spokane Regional and will take on No. 11 Central Michigan at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

That game will be played in Columbus.

Grambling also earned a bid in the field as the SWAC Champions.

They are in the Lexington Region, earning the No. 15 seed. They will face No. 2 Baylor.
