The Nicholls State University softball team is going to the Southland Conference Tournament.


The Colonels swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this past weekend, dominating the series and outscoring their foe by a combined 24-1 score over the three-game road slate.

With the victories, the Colonels remained in first-place in the Southland, improving their record to 35-13 overall and 1&-6 in Southland flay.

They also clinched a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament which means that the team will compete far an NCAA Tournament bid in a few weekends in Lake Charles.


If the Colonels keep playing like they played this past weekend, they will be an awfully tough out in the Southland Tournament

Nicholls dominated all three games, using productive play in every phase to post the wins.

In game one on Friday after-noon, the Colonels scuffled early a Utile offensively, but then soared, flaring a 6-0 win.


The teams went to the fourth inning in a scoreless tie when the Colonels plated their first run of the game – a sacrifice fly off the hat of Kasey Frederick, which a cored Kali Clement for a 1-0 lead.

The Colonels doubled that lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning when Morish Strother readied on an error, which plated Frederick.

The two runs were plenty for Nicholls pitcher Megan Landry, who dominated in the circle for the Colonels, tossing six perfect innings with no hits or walks allowed in 61 pitches.


Landry would have likely gotten a chance to finish the no-hitter in the seventh inning, but Nicholls Hew the game open, scoring four runs, which sent the game to its final margin.

After the four-run rally and with another game scheduled for Friday afternoon, the Colonels opted to save pitches in Landry’s arm and use Amanda Holliday in the seventh.

She allowed a hit but nothing on the scoreboard, preserving Nicholls’ win.


About 30 minute after game 1, Nicholls and Corpus Christi. played the second game of the three-game series and in this game. Nicholls left no doubt.

The Colonels started fast, scoring three runs in the first two innings to take an early 3-0 edge.

Frederick had an RBI single in the first inning while center fielder Kelsey Miller delivered the big blow in the second – a two-RBI hit which gave the team some cushion.


Nicholls added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Jewel Lara collected one of her three hits in the game – an RBI single to go up 4-0.

From there. Nicholls pushed the game into mercy-rule territory in the fifth, a raring four rune to go up 8-0.

That outburst forced the Lady Islanders to either score a run or see the game end early.


They never threatened, going down in order to surrender control of the series to Nicholls.

Alexis LaBnre got the win for Nicholls in the circle, tossing four and a third innings on the mound, while tossing 73 pitches.

Holliday again worked in relief, getting the final two outs for the Colonels.


After the double-header sweep, the teams reset and returned to the diamond on Saturday for the finale.

Nothing changed.

Again, Nicholls hit. Fielded and pitched its way to an easy, mercy-rule win.


The Colonels won the finale 10-1 in five innings. using clutch offense and great pitching from Landry to secure the win.

The game was actually heavily in doubt.

The Lady Islanders got a run in the bottom of the second inning to go up 1-0 – their only lead of the series.


That advantage held all the way until the fifth inning when the Colonels reversed the deficit into a mercy rule, scoring 10 rims to end the game early.

Nicholls sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, getting bog hits from just about everyone in their lineup.

The first six batters in the inning reached base safely which allowed Nicholls to go up 5-1.


But it looked like the damage might stop there. The Lady Islanders got two-straight strikeouts after surrendering the lead

But Nicholls wasn’t done, plating seven runs with a huge two-out rally, which pushed the game to 10-1.

After the offensive outburst Landry gave way to LaBure, who closed the game with an easy fifth inning.


With the wins, the Colonels now have the inside track to win the regular season Southland crown

The Colonels have a one-game lead over both Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen R Austin And a two-game lead over McNeese. which Bits at 16-6.

Nicholls will end the regular season from the comforts of home with a three-game weekend series against Lamar.


If the Colonels win two of the three games, they will be guaranteed at least a share of the regular season title. If they sweep, they will earn the title outright.

Southeastern and McNeese play one another in a aeries, so someone at the top has to lose games next weekend, which also benefits Nicholls.

Stephen F. Austin will face Abilene Christian, which sits at 15-11 in the league.
