People who have been around Slekis throughout her career say that she will be successful at Nicholls.
Former North Texas Athletics Director Rick Villarreal hired Slekis to the Mean Green’s program during his tenure, which lasted from 2001-2016.
He said she will be a great head coach.
“Stefanie Slekis is a young coach who made an immediate impact when she joined our program four years ago,” Villarreal said. “The improvement in our cross country program, which was her responsibility, was phenomenal. … I think she’s somebody that will definitely invest the time to get the vest best out of her student-athletes.”
Former Mean Green competitor Troy Taylor agrees.
He said that Slekis’s teaching tools helped allow him to reach the NCAA’s three times while at North Texas – something he believes will greatly benefit the Colonels.
“Coach Slekis is a great coach,” he said. “Her methods are very team-oriented and focused on creating a stronger team relationship. Being a very motivated person by nature, she’s really good at making you want to work harder every day. She understands what it takes to win a championship title and compete at a high level as she was able to do and accomplish with us during her time at North Texas.
“I think she’s going to be a great addition to the program at Nicholls.”
