Harvey has made landfall, but believe it or not, the most active time of the hurricane season still is not here.

The National Hurricane Center said this week that September 10 is the peak date of each hurricane season – the day where tropical development is most likely to be active.

Looking around the tropics at press-time shows that global waters are quite active.

Hurricane Irma reached major hurricane strength over the weekend.

At press-time on Monday, she was churning with wind speeds greater than 100 mph.

Long-term forecasts for Irma are still uncertain, but models are trending against a Gulf of Mexico arrival.

Most models think that Irma will veer to the north of the Gulf, which should spare Louisiana from any impacts.

Long-range models indicate that there is a risk for a landfall somewhere between Georgia and the Carolinas – sometime next week.

But meteorologists stress often that long-term forecasts are just educated guesses, which means that Irma’s track could still shift before landfall.
