A 24-year-old Raceland woman was killed in a head-on collision shortly before 8 p.m. Friday after a vehicle attempted to pass in a no passing zone on La. Highway 1 just south of Lockport.

Rebecca Cooper, a passenger in a Ford F-150 driven by Dustin Pitre, 22, also of Raceland, was flown to University Hospital in New Orleans, according to Trooper Evan Harrell, spokesman for the Louisiana State Police Troop C. She later died from her injuries.

Harrell said Jon Mollohan, 43, of Magnolia, Texas, was traveling north in a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado when he attempted to pass a vehicle in a slight curve in the roadway. Pitre attempted to avoid the Silverado by steering to the right, but as he returned to the road, he veered into the southbound lane of La. 1. The two vehicles struck head-on, the spokesman said.

Brenda Thompson, 44, of Houston, Texas, who was riding in the Silverado, was treated with minor injuries at Ochsner St. Anne Hospital, as was Mollohan, who received moderate injuries. Pitre received minor injuries.

Harrell said all parties were wearing seat belts.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, Harrell said. The investigation is ongoing.
