Is your resume outdated? Your computer skills rusty?

The Terrebonne Parish Library is hosting Work Skills Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Library beginning March 30.

Sessions will review resume writing, filling out online applications, computer searches for job openings and very basic computer skills.

“We’ve seen so many people – a lot of laborers and other people affected by the oil-and-gas downturn-and people who are maybe looking to re-enter the workforce or looking for a change, who have not touched a resume for years stopping by for help,” said Lauren Bordelon, adult services and public relations librarian.

Based on the growing number of requests at each of the Terrebonne library system’s branches, Work Skills Wednesday was born.

“Maybe you’ve never had to write a resume or never had to use Monster.com to look for a job because you have had a job for the last 20 years,” Bordelon said. “We’ll cover computer-based skills, details to include in your resume. Things people need

to know to help find work.”

Bordelon said one-on-one help will continue to be available at the various library branches, but the Work Skills Wednesday sessions are intended to provide a day-long, understandable source for job seekers.

“This would be great, too, for people who are returning to the workforce,” Bordelon said. “We’ve seen retirees who are deciding to go back to work to have something to do or to help pay for health care. This is a great way for someone who has been away from computers or who hasn’t had to write a resume in years to hone their skills.”

The day is not intended to serve as a job fair, she said. Instead, sessions will include: Resume 101, Job Searching, Basic Computer, Email and Word. The sessions will run concurrently throughout the day.

“The first Work Skills day is intended to cover the basics,” Bordelon said. Depending on public feedback, she said it is feasible that future sessions may include conquering the job interview and other work-related topics. “If we hear from enough people seeking help with that, we may be able to offer that later,” she said.

Adult services and public relations librarian Lauren Bordelon said Work Skills Wednesday was designed to help job seekers build a resume and hone needed computer skills.
