Sand and sandbag stations have been opened in both Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes in anticipation of the possibility for flooding from the predicted severe weather. The area is under a Flash Flood Watch through 6 p.m. Saturday, a Coastal Flood Advisory until 6 p.m. Friday, and a wind advisory until 6 p.m. this evening.
According to the National Weather Service, Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes could receive 4 to 7 inches of rainfall, and up to 13 inches in isolated areas.
Tides are expected to range 1.5 to 3 feet above normal, causing floodin in low-lying areas, Earl Eues Jr., director of the parish’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, warned.
Lafourche Parish President Jimmy Cantrelle is urging residents and business owners to check drainage ditches for any items that may slow the flow of rainwater.
“Checking the canals around your home and clearing any obstacles will greatly aid the flow of water and help to minimize any potential flooding,” he said. “We are asking people to be cautious once it begins raining and to take precautions while driving on wet roads.”
Meanwhile, Eues’ office, Terrebonne law enforcement authorities and parish agencies are meeting this afternoon to discuss possible emergency actions depending on the severity of the storm front.
Self-filling sandbag stations are available at the locations below. Residents are urged to bring their own shovel to fill the sandbags.
