“Hey, CCA! Hey, great run, man.”

South Terrebonne High School runner Lane Robichaux had to stop Covenant Christian Academy’s Andrew Edmonds and congratulate him moments after an impressive performance. The top two finishers in the boys’ race at the Terrebonne Parish Cross Country Meet embraced and fought through hard breaths to share a quick word.

Edmonds bested Robichaux by nine seconds, finishing with a time of 17:52 to take the title of boys’ high school champion in Terrebonne Parish. CCA Coach Tex Martin said he expected Edmonds to win based on his recent workouts and he was pleased with Edmonds’s strong performance on Thursday. According to Martin, the result is a testament to the amount of hard work Edmonds has put in a short amount of time.

“This is only his second year running, and he’s improved quite a bit. He couldn’t even run a seven-minute mile, and he’s gone to doing what he’s doing now. So it’s impressive what he’s accomplished in two years,” Martin said.

Edmonds credited Martin’s preparations and Robichaux’s efforts to help him steam ahead and take the parish crown in 2016.

“The dude in second really helped me push to stay away from him. I’d have to say all the lactic acid training we do at practice helped me a lot,” Edmonds said. Overall, South Terrebonne claimed the team championship on the boys’ side, taking three of the top five spots for a total of 32 points. Vandebilt Catholic came in second place with 57 points, Terrebonne High School took third with 76, followed by Houma Christian’s 131, CCA’s 145 and H.L.

ourgeois’s 167.

On the girls’ side, Vandebilt Catholic swept the field, fielding the top seven runners and netting a perfect score of 15. South Terrebonne earned 58 points for second place, with HLB’s 83 and Houma Christian’s 95 points rounding out the field.

Vandebilt eighth-grader Madison Richoux paced the girls’ field with a winning time of 21:35. Vandebilt Coach Dave Malone said Richoux’s presence has been a relief for a team that lost two-time individual state champion Alexa Breaux to graduation this year. Malone said the youth infusion of Richoux and others, combined with veteran runners, has the team poised to make a push for that elusive state title.

“When you lose somebody like that, you think, ‘The season might not be as good as the previous years,’ but [Richoux]’s come in, proven herself to be one of the best runners definitely in Terrebonne Parish and one of the best runners in the state when it’s all said and done,” Malone said.
