A convicted child rapist whose trial turned the Terrebonne Parish courthouse into an armed camp due to security concerns prompted by his political involvement was sentenced to life in prison, prosecutors confirmed.

District Judge Randy Bethancourt pronounced a sentence of life with no parole for Terry Lynn Smith, a member of the anti-government Sovereign Citizens Movement, in connection with the sexual abuse of his step-daughter over a decade, including years when she was under the age of 12.

Smith also faces charges in St. John the Baptist Parish in connection with the 2012 shooting of a deputy. His family members and associates face 1st degree murder charges in connection with the killing of two officers.

Crimes against the girl were committed in several jurisdictions, including Houma.

He was convicted by a jury in January on charges of aggravated rape, sexual battery and aggravated incest.

Court records showed that he received life for the rape charge, an additional 50 years for sexual battery and 15 years on the incest counts.
