The Hourna Police Department offers the public a few tips on how to stay safe this Mardi Gras season.

• Nevar unlock your vehicle prior to reaching it with your remote. This will prevent subjects from hiding in your car before you get to it. Stay in groups.


• Park in well-lit areas. Place all valuables in trunk of vehicles as not to encourage car burglaries. Thefts from vehicles occur at all hours of the day and night. If possible, park in a well lit area. Items that are mod commonly stolen from vehicles: backpacks, briefcases, day planners cash, check-books debit cards: wallets and purses (even when hidden under a seat or in an unlocked glove compartment); laptop computers, iPods and MP3 players (and docking stations); cell phones (and chargers); portable GPS navigation systems; jewelry, keys. mail (identity theft), tools.

• Designate a specific meeting place for family members should they become separated.

• Attach note cards on your children with your name, address, and cell number and teach them to find a police officer should they become lost.


• Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

• Women should avoid carrying purees if at all possible.

• Remember, alcohol and safety must go hand and hand at all times. Intoxicated individuals are vulnerable to criminals.


The Houma Police Department asks that yen keep these laws in mind while on the parade route:

• It shall be unlawful for any person who is not a member of a carnival organization or a contracted participant to follow a float or band during the course of the parade. It is also unlawful for any parson to intentionally damage a parade float. Violators may be summoned or arrested.

• Do not throw any objects at float riders, band members or parade participants anyone caught doing this can be charged with battery.


• Underage drinking will not be tolerated Just a reminder; there is a designated alcohol and drug free zone at the public bus terminal located at Barataria Avenue-and Main Street.

• Please do not block inter sections with your vehicles as this causes delays in emergency response time.

• Should you need emergency assistance during parades, law enforcement officers are stationed at each comer to assist you.


• Parade viewers shall stay on the proper side of barricades and when there are no barricades please stay at a safe distance from floats and parade marchers. Float Riders have been advised not to throw to parade viewers who have crossed the barricades. We also ask parade viewers not to put their arms, hands,, or legs through die barricades. Also no standing or sitting on the barricades.

• There shall be no ally string allowed within 300 feet of any parade route within the parish on any day a parade is scheduled.

• Laser pointers are illegal.


• In order to provide safe viewing of parades it shall be unlawful for any person to hold a child or adult over the age of six (6) years in his arms or on his back or shoulders within ten (Id) feet of a carnival float or other parade viewers.

• It shall he unlawful for any person to use or possess any type of glass container within a distance of five hundred (500) feet of a carnival parade route. Two (2) hours prior, during, and one (1) hour fell owing a carnival parade.

• Loud profane music will not be tolerated by police officers. Violators will be issued a summons or arrested.


The Houma Police Department asks parade-goers to travel and walk in groups for safety Also please don’t leave any valuables in vehicles, and if anyone sees anybody driving while intoxicated, they can call Houma Police at 965-873-6371.
