A 25-year-old Golden Meadow man has been arrested for the murder of a 64-year-old Galliano man.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said on Monday morning that Cameron Sands, 25, of Golden Meadow, is in custody after his alleged role in the crime, which took place early in the morning on Friday, Nov. 4.

On the morning of Nov. 4, authorities were called to the home of Wayne Matherne, 64, of Galliano, after a meal-delivery worker arrived at his house and found him to be unresponsive.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Matherne dead.

Investigators studied the deceased man’s body and found him to have head trauma, including several lacerations on the top of his head.

Authorities said they questioned several neighbors of Matherne and identified Sands as someone who frequently the home.

At the time authorities were notified about Sands, they also discovered that he had recently been admitted to the hospital, and was unable to speak to deputies.

Authorities obtained a search warrant for the clothing the suspect wore to the medical facility, which they discovered to have blood stains.

Around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sands was released from the hospital and he was taken to LPSO’s South Lafourche Substation for questioning.

During his meeting with officers, Sands allegedly told detectives that he arrived at Matherne’s residence on Nov. 4 and an argument ensued.

During the argument, Sands said Matherne told him he was going to get a gun, which made him fearful and caused him to repeatedly hit the man in the head – first with a cane and then with a statue.

Sands is charged with second-degree murder for his alleged role in the incident. He is held at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
