TGMC striving for excellence

Folks over at Terrebonne General Medical Center said that 2015 was a great year for the hospital – one filled with prestigious awards, campus expansions and excellent care for the more than 58,000 patients the hospital treated.

Now, the focus is on maintaining that forward push and continuing to be among the leaders in local medicine.

TGMC President and CEO Phyllis Peoples said this week that her hospital enjoyed a significant amount of progress in the past year – a year the CEO believes was loaded with success stories for the local medical center.

Peoples said TGMC has a winning team, and with the right people in place, the hospital is anticipating future successes.

“We anticipate a very bright future because of the talented staff and physicians who provide passionate care for our patients both inside our hospital and out in our community,” she said. “TGMC is truly blessed to have the most dedicated physicians and staff who call TGMC home and who work every day to ensure only the best of care for all of our patients and our community.”

The hospital earned significant recognition in 2015, further solidifying its position as one of the better medical facilities in both Louisiana and in the country.

In the past 12 months, Terrebonne General’s Chest Pain Center was recognized nationally with the Amerinet Healthcare Achievement Award. On a statewide level, TGMC was given the American Heart Association’s Gold Quality Achievement Award for the hospital’s excellence in both stroke and resuscitation care.

One of the crown jewels of TGMC is its Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, and that facility also continued to accumulate high marks in the past year.

The cancer center was named to the Becker’s Hospital Review Top 100 Hospitals for Great Oncology programs. The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC also received the National Quality Oncology Practice Initiative Certification Program and the Outstanding Achievement Award, given by the Commission on Cancer (CoC).

TGMC also was given the Pathway to Excellence nurses accreditation in 2015 – an honor that shows the hospital continues to nourish the best career environment for nurses.

It also got an A’ Grade by Leapfrog Hospital Safety Scores – the Top Performer on Key Quality Measures.

“I am proud to say that miracles happen every day at TGMC,” Peoples said.

TGMC also made some expansions in 2015 – most notably its beautiful Sports Performance Training Center, while also completing its MRI Caring suites in Radiology and its Hybrid Operating Room.

The Sports Performance Training Center is a local gem. Led by master trainer and Houma-born Zach Voss, the facility features state of the art equipment and training techniques that are first-class in the field.

The facility, which is painted bright yellow on all of its walls, is a piggy back off the hospital’s Community Sports Institute – a program that has garnered continued recognition in the past year for its excellence.

Voss said he loves going to work every day, because of the amazing support the hospital has given the training center, stocking it full with the best equipment possible. The trainer is also a star in his own right, having experience working in professional baseball and owning a personality that’s very people-friendly and accommodating to those who need help either getting into shape and/or rehabbing an injury.

“I enjoy what I do,” Voss said. “The people here are great. The facility is excellent. It’s just a great thing. It’s something that was much needed in this area, and it’s something I’m happy to be a part of. It’s going to continue to grow from here, because the support we’ve received is tremendous.”

Voss and the training center are welcome additions to the TGMC family, according to Peoples, who said the center is a great place.

“TGMC is taking a proactive approach with the addition of the Sports Performance Training Center,” Peoples said when the facility opened. “Our goal is to provide more opportunities for our students and community to receive expert advice on performance training, while continuing to instill healthy lifestyles within our community.”

The community-first approach is where Peoples said TGMC stands apart from the rest.

The hospital said it’s proud of the many events held throughout the year to benefit The Foundation for TGMC and the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC – events like Ladies Night Out to the Rooftop Roundup.

Peoples said she was also proud of TGMC’s employee volunteer program, called Team Terrebonne, which gave its time in over 50 community events this past year, donating more than 3,100 hours of community service to the community.

Peoples said the community-first approach will never change and is the No. 1 reason why TGMC continues to thrive – something she said she believes will continue to occur into the future.

TGMC was awarded the prestigious Pathway to Excellence Re-accreditation by providing an exceptional work environment for nurses.
