Thibodaux native honored by American Sugar Cane League

Charley Richard is getting his sweet due from the American Sugar Cane League.


Richard, a prominent sugar-cane researcher and crop consultant, was recently presented the 2016 American Sugar Cane League President’s Award. It is the highest honor the League awards, according President Michael Melancon.

“Dr. Richard has been a valuable asset to the Louisiana sugar-cane industry for many years,” Melancon said. “We are very grateful for the service he has provided.”

Richard is executive vice president and managing director for the Sugar Processing Research Institute, an international organization that conducts research on sugar quality issues for its beet and cane sponsors along with sugar users and industry suppliers. He also owns C. Richard and Associates, a research firm that works in agronomy, processing and energy production in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guyana and Belize.


Richard and his wife, Romney, also own and publish the Sugar Journal, which covers sugar cane and sugar-beet production, processing and refining for food and energy sources internationally. Richard serves as the publication’s executive editor.

In addition to authoring more than 460 other publications, Richard is a member of several business and civic organizations.

Richard began working at the League in 1977 as a field agronomist. He was named the League’s research director in 1985, expanding his duties to include sugar-cane agronomy.
