Trick-or-treating hours in Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes are 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

An increased presence of law enforcement officers is expected across the region. Locals are urged to report suspicious activity or people to authorities.

As parents prepare costumes for their little ones and stock up on candy for Saturday’s Halloween activities, authorities are offering tips to ensure those who are out and about remain safe and enjoy the evening.

• Talk to your children about not going anywhere with strangers.

• Set a time for kids to be home.

• Check the area prior to trick-or-treating for registered sex offenders.

• A parent or responsible adult should walk with a child.

• Serve your kids a filling meal prior to trick-or-treating so they aren’t tempted to eat any candy before they bring it home for a parent or guardian to check.

• Look both ways before crossing the street and only cross at corners or crosswalks.

• Wear light-producing or reflective devices like flashlights, glow sticks, reflective tape or other similar products to be more visible in the dark.

• Let children know not to cut through fields.

• Stay in populated areas.

• Drive below the posted speed limit in residential areas during trick-or-treating hours.
