Thibodaux Regional Medical Center announced this week that it is targeting a late fall start on construction of its new Wellness Center.

The hospital said that the medically-integrated, planned state-of-the-art facility will break ground in the fall with construction planned shortly after.

TRMC boasted in a release that the center will provide wellness, education and physical fitness and also the following service centers: orthopedic and sports medicine center, spine center, neurosciences center, education center, imaging center, women’s breast health center, pain management center, weight management center and urgent care center.

By building this facility, TRMC said that it is taking a proactive role in addressing the health-related challenges within the region, while also enhancing the continuum of care.

The hospital said the idea for the center stems from increases in concern over health concerns like obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Through the new facility, TRMC boasts that it will be able to improve health for patients and also the overall quality of life in the area, which will reduce a family’s health-care expenses.

TRMC officials also tout that the center will provide health benefits to employers because community members will be able to decrease health-related employee absenteeism. Employees of the facility will also see a direct benefit because of the ability to use the tools at the facility to boost physical and mental health.

“Thibodaux Regional Medical Center is committed to making a difference in the health of the region,” said TRMC CEO Greg Stock. “We have a disproportionate incidence of diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Louisiana is ranked No. 7, No. 8 and No. 4, respectively compared to the rest of the country. The prevalence of these diseases in our region is even higher than in the state.”

The hospital said it has already taken steps with local businesses to provide education and screenings, while also participating in community health events and nutrition, diabetes and weight management education courses throughout the area.

Stock said the Wellness Center would be a continuation of those efforts.

“As community leaders, we have a responsibility to put forth our best effort and address these alarming health statistics,” Stock said. “We are committed to improving the health of our region and feel that we can make a positive difference.”

In addition to all of the human benefits, TRMC officials tout that the new facility will also be eco-friendly and will be built with a “green” approach.

A hospital release touting the Wellness Center said that green building materials and energy-efficient systems will be used. The Wellness Center will also be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
