SUSPECT CHARGED WITH 6TH DWI, 2ND IN 30

A Thibodaux man was charged with his sixth DWI last night – his second in the past 30 days.

Around 9 p.m. on Oct. 30, a deputy was at a convenience store on La. Highway 3185 in Thibodaux when he observed Craig Uggen, 58, drive up to the store.

The deputy knew Uggen had a suspended driver’s license because he had arrested him for DWI on Oct. 1, 2018.

After Uggen walked into the store, he approached the cashier’s counter where the deputy was standing. The deputy allegedly detected a strong odor of alcohol on Uggen’s breath, and he was exhibiting signs of possible intoxication.

The deputy followed the suspect outside and made contact with him. The suspect then submitted to a field sobriety test in which he performed poorly. He then took a breath test in which he blew a .260g% – more than 3 times above the legal limit.

Uggen has an extensive history with drunken driving.

In addition to the Oct. 1 arrest, he was also charged with fourth-offense DWI in Feb. 2011. Per Louisiana R.S. 14:98, the charge was eventually changed to third-offense DWI because it was his third offense in a 10-year period.

This was his sixth DWI total.

Uggen is also charged with driving under suspension. He was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center with bond set at $10,500.
