Houma native Ross Theriot was bummed out this week.

He works a 7-on. 7-off schedule and tie past week marked his days off

“That usually means it’s time to get on the water.” Theriot said

But Mother Nature had other plans.

Anglers say fishing is in a rough patch right mm with weather getting in the way of plentiful catches.

Theriot said last Thursday was a wash with, severe weather. Likewise, rains swept through on Sunday and washed him out.

On good days, winds are up. which he said is scattering fish and making it tough to be out on the water.

“Its been a frustrating week Theriot said. ‘We’ve had some rain and when it’s teen dry. the rain has been approaching, so the winds kicked up and made it difficult to get out and get your catch. It’s not been great for fishing in this area.”

The frustration factor amongst locals is that when condition are ripe, there are fish.

In southern Terrebonne. Theriot said he’s been catching trout — as plentiful as he’s enjoyed all year

“It was amazing for a few days.” he said. “It had been slow, but it’s like the fish all came on at once and every cast was a bite and a “beautiful fish.”

Redfish are also hitting — when winds are down in the parish’s marshes, but those days in the last week were few and far between.

In southern Lafourche Parish, the pattern mirrors Terrebonne with good fishing on days with clear, calm conditions.

Grand Isle native Jake Besson said the prettiest fish being caught in the Lafourche marshes right are redfish. though, he. too, said that speckled trout activity has picked up in recent weeks.

“It’s “been hot or cold, hit or miss.” Besson said. “The days that we get some sunshine or even some overcast skies, we can mop up and catch as long as there is sunlight over the water. But a lot of people didn’t do as well this past week because of the weather. It really held us back.”

Over on Grand Isle. regulars say that activity on the beach has amped up now that the Gulf of Mexico’s waters are a little warmer

“There’s teen more fishing.” Besson said “It’s still early, but people are coming out because the weather has been warmer and they’re just enjoying being under die sun.”

The charter/deepwater off-shore fishing season is still relatively inactive due to the last couple of late-season cold fronts that have swept through the area.

But once the weather is some-where in the high-70s to low-Ms. for a sustained period of 7-10 days. those boats will start to rev up and test their luck.

“If we don’t see another front that will be starting up soon — real soon.” Besson said.

Some of the best action locally has come in the fresh waters of the area with anglers reporting bass, sac-an-lait catfish, perch and crappie—all in plentiful catches.

In the freshwater areas of lower Terrebonne, the bass fishing has been good with several large fishing coming onto boats.

The sac-a-lait are also heating up.

“It’s a great time tor boss, tithing right now.” Theriot said.

It’s hard to get that really, really big fish., but year can catch 2-pound bass consistently throughout the day. That’s the best kind of fish to catch and. probably, to est. too.”

In Bayou Black, fishing is slow because of high mater levels from the run-off of snow slowly making its way south. That’s hampering fishing and will likely be a deterrent throughout the rest of the spring.

In Lafourche’s fresh waters. Bayou Lafourche has been a hotbed for catfish and perch. Anglers are also catching baas where structures exist.

Golden Meadow native Bo Collins said he’s been catching catfish “with ease” — no matter the weather; adding that because of bow wide open the bayou is, the tide never gets choppy, even on windy days.

“As long as its not raining. you can find, something that’s biting in the bayou.” Collins said. “It might be perch one day. bass another day, whatever it may be. But the res always something biting”

The good news for anglers is that the rough patch of the past week should be short-lived.

Alter me weekend rains, the akies cleared out and the week looks mostly dry with just intermittent chances for showers the rest of the week.
