Richard’s contractor bill passes state Senate

A local legislator’s bill – which was hailed by Louisiana’s treasurer – has passed through the State Senate and is being credited with helping higher education, during a year when colleges and universities have been in the state’s budget cross hairs.

Rep. Dee Richard, no party affiliation, of Thibodaux, authored HB30, which requires legislative approval for consulting contracts worth $40,000 or more. It now heads for Gov. Bobby Jindal’s desk.

Treasurer John Kennedy was a strong supporter of the measure, along with several other bills passed by the senate that he said will not only help schools but curb corruption.

“Rep. Richard has worked tirelessly to bring sunshine to the thousands of consulting contracts that are hidden from view,” Kennedy said “Justify the worthwhile contracts to the public and get rid of the rest so our colleges aren’t on life support.”

The current legislative session adjourns Thursday.
