April 11, 2015SENATE PASSES OPT-OUT PROTECTION AMENDMENT
The United States Senate passed an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 that would prohibit the federal government from mandating that states adopt specific academic standards, including the Common Core standards, curriculum, or assessments. Additionally, this legislation would allow states that do not accept these standards to continue to qualify for federal grants and waivers currently limited to states that are in compliance with the standards.
LAFOURCHE TO HOLD SEAT BELT CHECKPOINT TODAY
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will hold a seat belt check point during daylight hours of April 1. During the checkpoint, motorists will be checked for seat belt and safety seat violations, as well as other violations like expired inspection tags.
VACHERIE COUPLE DIES IN BOAT CRASH EARLY FRIDAY
Deputies with the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office responded first to a call about a boat crashing into a tree in Bayou Chevreuil just off La. Highway 20 near the parish borders.
Upon investigation, it was discovered that Shawn Cortez, 38, and Cheryl Cortez, 48, were on board the boat at the time of the crash and were killed.
