Westside Blvd. Bridge Closed

The Westside Boulevard Bridge crossing Bayou Terrebonne will close for construction that is slated to last between six and eight months. Work to widen the bridge began on Tuesday.


The bridge is being widened to accommodate two-way traffic and is expected to relieve traffic congestion at the intersection of Westside Boulevard and West Main and Park streets.

Cellphones Banned in School Zones

Drivers are reminded that it is illegal to use cellphones in school zones. Authorities are enforcing the law.


Posted signs alert motorists of the “hands-free zone.” School zones are in effect from 7 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. on school days.

The fine for violators is up to $175 for the first offense and up to $500 for subsequent violations. The fine doubles if the driver is involved in a crash while using a cellphone.

Gubernatorial candidates to speak on coastal restoration


Public Service Commissioner Scott Angelle, Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne, State Rep. John Bel Edwards and U.S. Sen. David Vitter will speak at a forum Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m., at Peltier Auditorium on Nicholls State.

Candidates are expected to answer questions on funding restoration, science-based solutions and harnessing the power of the Mississippi River for restoration.
