Next Saturday (August 10), local youth basketball players will show off their skills and compete for a cash prize in the 1st Annual 3-on-3 Youth Basketball Tournament at Senator Street park in Houma.
The tournament will consist of four age divisions: ages 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18.
Teams that come out on top of each division will be awarded $100 and medals.
Free snowballs and hamburgers will be available for all in attendance, while supplies last. There will also be a DJ for musical entertainment.
The tournament was started by Houma native Alonzo Coleman of Uplift Youth Now — his non-profit organization that awards local school children — who are attending and excelling in class — cash, gift cards or various other prizes.
Coleman said he started the tournament because he wanted to give youth from the area an opportunity to participate in one more fun event before school starts. He also hopes that parents of Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) players who aren’t able to travel with their child’s team will be able to experience their young athlete’s development at the tournament.

Sponsors and volunteers are welcome, Coleman said, and can contact him if interested through the Uplift Youth email.
“Everyone should come out because it’s for the youth and gets them together,” Coleman told the Times. “We’re just trying to get the community together one last time before the kids have to go back to school.”
