Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter is offering a solution for people wishing their exercise had a little more cuteness in it.

The shelter has begun a Rescue Run Fridays program, where anyone can swing by the shelter and pair up with a dog to go for a trip outside. Volunteers can walk or run 15 laps at the nearby Lafourche Parish Jail for a distance of about three miles.

Today will be the third Friday the shelter is hosting the event, and it continues each Friday going forward. LPAS Manager Hilary Detillier said her staff got the idea from the St. Charles Parish shelter, and they piggybacked from that.

Detillier said the program has been a success so far, with around 20 volunteers showing up each of the first two Fridays. She said the shelter was able to get each of the adoptable dogs out and moving, which has been a challenge for the staff.

“We don’t have a whole lot of green space to run the dogs right now. So getting them out on the Friday mornings is pretty big for them,” Detillier said.

According to Detillier, besides getting the dogs some much-needed exercise and outdoor time, the program should also help in the shelter’s main goal of finding each pup a home.

“After their morning run, they’re pretty pooped. They kind of just rest and hang out. Fridays are a pretty big adoption day here, so we like them to be on their best behavior for the adopters,” Detillier said.

Anyone interested in walking or running with a dog can show up at the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter at 934 La. Hwy 3185 at 9 a.m. on a Friday. First-timers who have not completed the volunteer orientation are asked to show up 20 minutes to get a quick overview.
