Football-craved fans will get a chance to see a little gridiron action this weekend at John L. Guidry Stadium in Thibodaux.

The Nicholls State University football team will hold its spring game on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. – the last live work the team will have until summer camp begins before the 2017 season.

Admission to the game is free.

Colonels coach Tim Rebowe said at the beginning of spring practices that the team’s focus in the offseason is clear: progression and competition.

“We have built up a little bit of depth in certain positions, so that’s something that’s good, because it really raises the level of effort you get in practice because spots are less secure,” Rebowe said. “We’ve made steps, and we’ve done a lot of things to make our program better. But the focus this offseason is just to keep it going and keep it rolling because there’s still work to be done.”

The 2016 season was a good one for Nicholls – a sign that Rebowe’s rebuilding effort is starting to pay off.

The Colonels were 5-6 last season – all five wins coming in Southland Conference games.

Using history to show Nicholls’ growth, the Colonels won just five Southland Conference games combined from five seasons from 2011-15.

The team Nicholls will field in 2017 has promise, because the Colonels have several key returnees.

Quarterback Chase Fourcade is back after showing tons of promise as a true freshman.

The Colonels also have experience back on both lines of scrimmage and in their playmakers.

Rebowe said the focus of the spring game will be to keep players healthy and learn what guys can do in live-game situations.

But he quickly added that the team we see this weekend is incomplete, because Nicholls will add some high school signees over the summer – guys who the coach believes can contribute this fall.

Rebowe says focus is on depth, health in final practice game
