Approximately 145 second grade students at Schriever Elementary School were offered a lesson in finance, and taught some math and reading with it, by five members of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants South Central Chapter and eight accounting students from Nicholls State University last Wednesday.

Joining efforts with health and benefits manager Gilsbar, Inc., SLCPA members presented personal money management books and a practical learning session to students in hopes of developing financial disciplines in them at an early age.

Presenters offered each student a copy of the book, “Alexander, Who Used to be Rich Last Sunday.” Lessons included reading from the book and classroom discussion. Students were also given informational handouts to take home to their parents.

“It is important for kids to learn early how to save money rather than just spend it as soon as they have it,” CPA Shirley Porche said. “This lesson encompasses reading and math so it is very complete.”

“This is a really good program,” Nicholls State University student Sarah Sullivan said. “Teaching them the value of money young will help them when they are older.”

“Understanding what money is and how to manage it is a critical life skill,” SLCPA spokesperson Ann Lupo said. “[The] LCPA and its literacy partners know it is never too early to start giving children a solid foundation for making a lifetime of smart financial decisions,”

“This is a great idea,” Thibodaux said while observing her students with the presenters. “They will remember what the CPAs tell them about how to save money.”

CPAs participating in this lesson included Porche who is with Lanaux & Felger, Gretchen Bourgeois of Beyer, Stagni & Co., Kristina Thibodaux from Beyer, Stagni & Co., CPA Lorelei Walker and Shantel Sonier of Malcolm M. Dienes LLC.

Nicholls State University students participating in the program included Sullivan, Danielle Williams, Heidi Bergeron, Ariona Williams, Antoniece Hester, Derrick Zeringue, Heather Vessell and Stephanie McElroy.
